10 glacier curiosities you did not know

Glacier: “an enormous layer of ice that originates from the accumulation, compaction and recrystallization of snow”. We do not know if that is the first thing that came to your mind when reading that word, but surely you have thought about being cold. However, this is not the only thing that glaciers hide. From Ice Tech we would like you to learn everything about ice. Write down:
Freshwater Reserve.

If there is something that worries us throughout the year, is that there is no shortage of water to be able to supply ourselves by them. Glaciers are considered to be strategic reserves of fresh water because they “keep” the snow in winter for the following months.

Water storage.

A 75% of the planet’s fresh water is stored by them. A 75%!

Meters and meters of ice.

The areas of the planet covered by ice occupy more than 15 million square kilometres. And they will hopefully not run out!

Blue water?

Exactly. The condensation of the oxygen particles causes that the blue colour of its nucleus manifests itself when they become frozen. However, before getting a 100% frozen white bubbles are created.

Long live the thickness!

When we see it in the movies, we imagine that the ice is thin and easy to break, but we are wrong. Ice from glaciers is up to 4.7 km in thickness. Can you imagine a bit of ice in an Ice Tech cocktail?

Lambert-Fisher is the largest glacier on Earth.

Located in the Antarctica, this glacier is 400 km long and more than 100 kilometres wide.

Beware of the rocks.

Not all the ice on the planet is white and pretty. Many of the glaciers are undercovered under rocks. In fact, sometimes they are mixed.

Ice, ice and more ice.

Glaciers, in their last ice age, covered a 32% of the Earth’s surface.

Stop thawing!

If glaciers melt, the sea level would rise about 70 meters around the world.

Climate change indicators.

The bubbles contained in ice allow to study the climate fluctuations for thousands of years.

Undoubtedly, glaciers are vital for the survival of the planet.
