5 curiosities about ice skating
Figure skating, a sport characterized by being a mixture between dance and ice… Winter is coming and we are already looking forward to enjoying the great show that ensures this sport. Beyond what we can see, there are a number of curiosities behind this peculiar sport. From Ice Tech we would like to tell you some of them:
1- It emerged as a means of transport.
Although we all know it as a dance, ice skating aroused in the 12th Century in order to transport people on ice. This was very characteristic in countries with cold climates, as is the case in Holland.
2 – The origin was to encourage ice skating in summer.
Yes, it is. It is believed that the first model of skates was developed around the year 1700 by a German who wanted to simulate ice skating in summer.
3- The first skates were built with bones.
It is unthinkable to imagine the skates of today in the Seventeenth Century, right? Effectively. At first, they were bones with ropes that were directly attached to the shoes. In fact, it was not until the Nineteenth Century, when the skates that we currently know appeared, always taking into account the continuous improvements they have experienced over the years.
4- The first ice rinks were artificial and outdoors.
Such was the success of the skating, that there was a growing interest in turning ice skating into a sport (19th Century XIX). Can you imagine an Ice Tech ice rink? We are already thinking about it 😉 .
5- The father of figure skating was… Jackson Haines.
An American skater who combined his knowledge in ballet and his experience in skating to give us the sport that we know today.
