Mantua, the beautiful jewel of the Renaissance
In the past, traveling to Italy was a long journey that normally only rich young people of the aristocracy could afford. Today, the beautiful Italy remains as one of the privileged destinations that everyone wants to visit and luckily, is within reach of almost everyone. Ice Tech offers a new tour of one of the cities with more history and tradition: Mantua, the jewel of the Renaissance.
Mantua
Mantua or Mantova (in Italian) is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Italy, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2008 and the capital of culture in Italy in 2016.
This south-eastern Lombardy city, extends as a small peninsula surrounded by three artificial lakes: Lake Superior, the Middle Lake and the Lower Lake. This particular characteristic makes the city of Mantua seem to be born from water and hence is known as “the city that emerges from the water.“
There are many monuments you should visit if you travel to Mantua, but the ones you certainly should not miss are:
- Piazza Sordello. Known as the great central square, it was the former centre of political and artistic life. In it you can see the main monumental buildings of the city such as the Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzo Acerbi with the Torre della Gabbia, the Palazzo Bonacolsi and the Duomo.
- Piazza Broletto. The busiest one in the city. It is characterized by housing famous buildings of the communal period like the Palazzo Massaro and the Palazzo della Podesta with the Torre Comunale.
-
Duomo di Mantova o Cattedrale di San Pietro: Built in the early Fifteenth Century, with Romanesque style. It was rebuilt in 1545 by Giulio Romano, giving it a shape similar to that of St. Peter’s in Rome.
- Palazzo Ducale: Headquarter of the Gonzaga, the governing family of the state of Mantua. It consists of several buildings connected by corridors and galleries, among which the Castello di San Giorgio stands out.
For all the Renaissance lovers, getting lost in the centre of Mantua will be an experience, since it offers a complete tour full of tradition, where you can admire its monumental richness, its natural charms and also its gastronomy.
