Matera is a journey into the forgotten past. It is a town born among stones, which has been part of the UNESCO’s list as a World Heritage Site since 1993.

Yes, among the stones. Matera is full of rocks, known as tufo or calcarenitos, and used by the great craftsmen.

What is truly incredible about the place is Sassi, a gigantic urban sculpture made of carved houses with tufo.

What to see.

There are many more incredible corners in the village, beyond the Sassi.

1- The Civita neighbourhood.

A whole natural fortress. Inside of it thre is the Romanesque Duodomo, built in 1270 on the acropolis. It counts in its interior with fascinating works of art of great value.

2- The Murgia park.

A natural historical archaeological park, symbol of the rural civilization of the place. It is characterized by its characteristic rocks because of the curious shapes that have been adopted over the years.

It has more than 1,200 botanical species within its 7,000 hectares of surface.

3- The Rock Churches.

Featuring more than 8,000 hectares between Matera and Monstescaglioso. They have more than 150 churches, among which the ones of San Leonardo, San Giacomo, Capuccino Vecchio and Santa Caesarea stand out. Most of them were built during the Middle Ages.
