The beauty of Siena goes beyond its own streets and monuments. The towns with which it counts are pure charm and dream. Today at Ice Tech we tell you about Monteriggione, the stone village that will steal your heart.
Monteriggioni.
It is a small fort located on a hill, an entire Medieval village. Years don’t pass through it, so the essence of the Middle Ages can be admired in each of its streets. Built between 1213 and 1219 on the hills of Siena, Monteriggioni was one of the strategic places for military purposes. This small Medieval village is very close to the great Florence, specifically 55 km to the south. It is currently preserved intact and very protected by its great wall that will make you travel through time.
Not only it counts with 50 houses, but it also has a special charm. Its buildings stand out for their stone walls, being the visit to the main square and its Romanesque church of Santa María de la Asunción essential. It was built in the Thirteenth Century, and it currently keeps a bell of 1299. It preserves a painting of the Seventeenth Century in which the Virgin of the Rosary is represented.
The restaurants are spectacular and if you are looking for something typical of the place, you MUST try the wines of the region.
There are not many places to visit, but there is no doubt that it is a unique place to enjoy free time. The place is charming, with a quiet and friendly atmosphere.
The most impressive thing to see is the beautiful landscape that can be appreciated from the wall, where you can see the Tuscan countryside. Moreover, you can see the different houses that are inside the fort surrounded by the unique gardens of the time.
