Syracuse.

The traces of the ancient Greek civilizations still persist through the streets of this beautiful city. The trip to this corner of Sicily is a journey in time.

Romans and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Suevians and Aragonese, each and every one of them has left its mark in the streets of Syracuse.

The oldest neighbourhoods in the city are Neapolis, Akradina, Ortigia, Tyche, and Epipoli. They are neighbourhoods with incredible dimensions, where history is the most demanded attraction of all visitors.

It is known as the largest Greek city outside Greece, so the cultural richness with which it counts is incalculable.

Among the various places that can be visited, from Ice Tech we have selected the following ones:

  • Neapolis Park: it is an archaeological park located in the upper part of Siracusa. It is divided into three parts: Greek theatre (one of the largest in the world), Roman amphitheatre and Latomia.
  • The island of Ortigia: it is the heart of Syracuse and the oldest point of the city.
  • The necropolis of Pantalica: the archaeological value of the place is incalculable, counted with thousands of tombs excavated in the rock by the first inhabitants of the land and used by Romans and Greeks.
  • The Ibleos mountains: volcanic limestone mountains known for their great olive oil.
  • Greek Temple of Apollo: located in the centre of Syracuse, on the small island of Ortigia. It has 2,000 years of history and is the oldest Doric temple in Sicily.
  • Archimedes’ tomb: Decorated with two Doric columns, it is actually a Roman tomb. Thanks to Cicero, this tomb was attributed to Archimedes, since there was a sculpture that alluded to the great discovery of the mathematician there, consisting of a sphere and a cylinder of the same size and diameter.
  • Castle Maniace: located in the old Ortigas neighbourhood. It was used both as a prison and as a warehouse for military equipment.
