Bologna: “La Dotta, la Rossa e la Grassa”

Although it is not yet one of the great goals of tourism in Italy, Bologna is a Medieval university, historical, quiet and easy to explore city that engages those who visit it. From Ice Tech we invite you to discover one of the best preserved historical cities in the world.

Bologna.

Bologna is located in northern Italy, in the region of Emilia Romagna. It is one of those cities, which is small but it deserves to be calmly visited and you should enjoy all its corners.

It is known as “La Dotta” because here is one of the oldest and well known universities; “La Rossa” for the preservation of the red colour, typical of the Medieval Age, on the roofs of the city; and “La Grassa” for its wonderful gastronomy, which goes beyond the mortadella that bears its name.

One of the quintessential visits is the University, one of the oldest and largest in Europe, which makes Bologna the University City par excellence. Numerous local and foreign students give every year a touch of youth and joy to the city.

Another recommended visit is the Plaza Mayor known as “Piazza Grande”. It dates from the Fifteenth Century and still retains its original appearance. We can find the most important buildings of the city there, which are of a political and religious character:

  • The Basilica of San Petronio. It is the largest and oldest church in the city. There are conserved works of great artists on it. For a long time, it was used as a place of events, court, and other purposes.
  • The Palacio Comunal. Built during the Communal Age, it now houses the Morandi Museum. It is a set of several buildings from different eras, a fortress with few entrances, great walls and towers on its sides.
  • The Palacio del Podestà (the mayor). Also built in the communal age, it is characterized by an elevated tower and by the “voltone del podestà”, a portico decorated with the statues of the patron saints of the city: Petronio, Procolo, Domenico and Fracisco.
